If you're looking to help fight malaria, check out the Against Malaria Foundation. They're super transparent and get stuff done. 100% of public donations buy long-lasting insecticidal nets that keep folks safe from malaria. They even check up on things after giving out the nets to make sure they're doing their job. By supporting them, you're helping to kick malaria to the curb for good!

Alex’s Lemonade Stand is a foundation that has raised more than $250 million for Childhood cancer and funded over 1,000 research projects.

Alex was a little girl that was diagnosed with cancer when she was 1 year old, one day when Alex was in the hospital she told her parents that she wanted to have a lemonade stand. When asked what she wanted to buy with the money, she told her parents she didn’t want to spend the money she wanted to give the money to doctors so they could help more kids. Alex, unfortunately, passed away, but her mission lived on through the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.

Not only does Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation help provide grants to study childhood cancers, but they also provide support to families with children fighting childhood cancers. Their Travel For Care Program helps to offset travel costs for families who need to travel to get their child the most care. They also have a SuperSibs program that provides support for siblings of children who are fighting cancer.

The CMTA has a 4 (out of 4) star rating on Charity Navigator and they have been instrumental in funding pre-clinical research and treatment development, as well as funding camps for kids with CMTA who have mobility and dexterity challenges (Camp Footprint!).

A lot of their investment and advocacy has already paid off as one of the CMT 1A treatments that they had invested in was acquired by Novartis in July! I have been working really closely with a neurologist/researchers from University of Rochester in NY and one at the Gene Institue of Cyprus in Europe to develop a natural history study for CMT 4C to show how the disease progresses over time, which will be absolutely essential for getting any biotech or pharma companies interested in treating CMT 4C (since they need "control" data to be able to prove that a treatment is working). They are presenting their proposal to the CMTA advisory board next month for approval and their goal is to have neurologists from the CMTA Centers of Excellence at UPenn, U of Iowa, and U of Rochester participate (with 2 locations in Europe, also).

All this to say, I am extremely pleased with the work that they do and I have watched firsthand the leaps and bounds they have made over the past several years to get CMT from the point of very little information to the point where they have identified dozens of genes that cause the disease, and have several promising gene therapies in development, and have multiple treatments for CMT 1A in human trials.

The JBC PANS & PANDAS Foundation provides emotional and practical support to help families like yours start on a path to healing.

PANS (Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) and PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Syndrome Associated with Streptococcus) occur when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells following an infection (e.g., strep throat), leading to brain inflammation. This misdirected immune response results in an acute onset of neuropsychiatric symptoms ranging from severe anxiety, aggression, and irritability to motor and sensory abnormalities. Symptoms are often very sudden in onset and can be alarming. Many parents describe watching their son or daughter transform into a child they do not recognize.

Pandas network is more about awareness and making people aware this is a real problem affecting kids. The JBC foundation actually spends most of its funds directly helping people in need who have been diagnosed with it as much of the care is not covered by standard insurance or is in trial phases currently so it is very expensive to treat.

Unfortunately, it is a newer neurological issue that affects 1 in 200 kids but is very underdiagnosed as it displays in each kid uniquely and usually as another problem like OCD, verbal or motor tics, Anxiety, Emotional instability, hallucinations, Urinary problems, and joint pain. These can have a huge effect on kids’ social and school performance and can even cause deterioration in both which can be detrimental to younger kids.
